215 Basic Side Chair
Reupholster a basic side chair from the frame up
This course will build on all previous knowledge and add many of the skills you’ll need to really start exploring upholstery furniture. This includes a functional understanding of modern foundation layers, easement cuts, and several techniques for closing fabric with no visible staples or stitches.
Before beginning this course, you should be comfortable with boxed cushions and all slip seat variations. If your chair has coil springs, you will want to complete that course simultaneously.
This course will demonstrate in great detail how to approach every step and skill in this type of chair. This includes assessing a sinuous spring system, building up modern foundation and padding layers, creating a cut list and diagram, centering/tensioning/finishing fabric in layered projects, easement cuts and other considerations when working directly onto a frame, hand stitching, pli-grip and back tacking.
This course includes several hours of video demonstration with close ups, and additional resources to help you put these skills into practice on similar chairs.
By the end of this course, and in combination with other content within the basic level courses, students will be well equipped to begin offering professional “light upholstery” services.
After this course, students should focus on gaining adequate practice and repetition until they very confident in applying what’s been introduced and how to navigate minor variations. This is a great time to seek a live class and/or virtual instructor support.
